About PTO Drive Shafts
A PTO drive shaft (Power Take-Off drive shaft) is the mechanical link between your tractor's output shaft and an attached implement. As the tractor's PTO engages — typically at 540 RPM for general implements or 1000 RPM for higher-speed applications — the shaft rotates, transmitting torque through a pair of universal joints and a telescoping inner/outer tube assembly. The telescoping design accommodates changes in the working distance between tractor and implement, while the universal joints allow the shaft to operate across a range of angles without binding.
Selecting the Correct Shaft
Selecting the correct agricultural PTO drive shaft starts with your implement's maximum torque requirement. The shaft series (1 through 8) must exceed this figure with adequate margin. Equally important is the yoke connection type: 6-spline 1-3/8" is standard for most tractors up to 100 HP; 6-spline 1-3/4" and 20- or 21-spline profiles appear on higher-horsepower machines and some European implements. Length matters too — the shaft must maintain at least 20% tube overlap at maximum extension to prevent separation and must not bottom out when fully compressed.
Critical Safety Specifications
Torque protection is a critical specification that buyers often overlook. Square balers, flail shredders, and wood chippers generate sudden shock loads that can destroy unprotected gearboxes in milliseconds. A shear-bolt clutch is the simplest and lowest-cost option; a friction disc torque limiter re-engages automatically after the overload event; a ratchet-type limiter provides audible warning before disengaging. Choosing the right protection device for your application is as important as the shaft series itself.
PTO Shaft Accessories
For repair and replacement, PTO shaft accessories allow targeted component replacement rather than whole-shaft replacement. A worn universal joint cross kit, a cracked outer tube, or a failed torque limiter can each be replaced individually. EPG Canada stocks all six component categories — yokes, U-joints, tubes, torque limiters, adaptor bushings, and tension pins — across Series 1 through 8 for fast repair turnaround at equipment dealerships and agricultural repair workshops across Canada.
Industrial PTO Drive Shafts
Industrial PTO drive shafts share the same basic architecture as agricultural units but are engineered for stationary installations and non-tractor prime movers. SAE flywheel flange connections, higher continuous duty ratings, and longer standard lengths distinguish industrial units. Common applications include irrigation pump drives, emergency generator sets, industrial wood chippers, and mobile compressors. EPG Canada can supply custom-length industrial assemblies with a typical lead time of five to ten working days.
PTO Drive Shaft — Common Questions
What is a PTO drive shaft and how does it work?
A PTO (Power Take-Off) drive shaft connects your tractor’s rear PTO output to a powered implement — baler, mower, mixer, or shredder. When the PTO engages, the shaft rotates at 540 or 1000 RPM, transmitting torque through universal joints and telescoping tubes that accommodate changes in distance and angle as the tractor moves. A safety guard covers the rotating assembly. Torque protection devices (shear bolts, friction clutches) prevent gearbox damage from sudden overload.
How do I select the correct series size?
Match series to your implement’s maximum torque demand, not just tractor horsepower. As a guide: Series 1–2 (up to 18 HP), Series 3 (up to 35 HP), Series 4 (up to 55 HP), Series 5 (up to 80 HP), Series 6 (up to 110 HP), Series 7 (up to 160 HP), Series 8 (over 200 HP). Always verify with the implement manufacturer’s specification. Our team can assist with selection — contact Effie at [email protected].
What PTO shaft do I need for a square baler?
Square balers create high shock loads when the plunger reverses direction, so a shear-bolt clutch or heavy-duty friction disc torque limiter is essential. For mid-range square balers (40–80 HP range), Series 4 or 5 shafts are typical. Confirm the spline count (most tractors use 6-spline 1-3/8″ or 6-spline 1-3/4″), the correct compressed and extended lengths (keep 20% overlap minimum), and whether a wide-angle joint is needed for tight tractor-baler geometry.
Do you supply PTO shafts for industrial (non-agricultural) applications?
Yes. Our industrial PTO drive shaft range covers pump drives, generator sets, compressor connections, wood chippers, and mobile equipment. Industrial assemblies typically specify SAE flanges, higher duty-cycle ratings, and longer operating lengths than agricultural units. Custom-length industrial shafts are available on request with a lead time of 5–10 working days.
Can I order individual components for repair?
Yes — we stock all individual accessories: yokes, U-joint cross kits, inner and outer tubes, torque limiters, adaptors, spline bushings, and tension pins. If you supply the series reference or OEM part number, we can match the correct replacement. Wholesale pricing is available for repair dealers carrying multiple series.
What is EPG Canada's minimum order and shipping policy?
There is no minimum order on standard stocked items. We ship from Richmond, BC via courier and freight for orders across Canada and the continental US. For high-volume or repeat orders, contact Effie at [email protected] to discuss consolidated shipping schedules and pricing.
