Why Engineers Choose EPG Canada for Gearbox Supply

A gearbox is the mechanical heart of virtually every industrial drive system — converting motor speed to usable torque for conveyors, mixers, agitators, hoists, pumps and automated machinery. Selecting the wrong gear reducer can result in premature failure, unexpected downtime and costly replacements.

As the Canadian sales representative for EPG Group, we supply a complete range of industrial gearboxes manufactured to AGMA, DIN 3990 and IEC 60034 standards. Every unit is traceable, dimensionally verified and ships with full documentation — so procurement teams and maintenance engineers can specify with confidence.

How do I select the correct gearbox ratio for my application?

The required gear ratio is calculated by dividing your motor input speed (RPM) by the desired output shaft speed. For example, a 1,450 RPM motor driving a conveyor at 29 RPM requires a 50:1 ratio. You must also verify that the selected gearbox’s rated output torque exceeds your application’s torque demand multiplied by the appropriate service factor (typically 1.25–2.0 for shock or variable loads). Our engineers can perform a complete sizing check — simply provide your motor power, speed and load data.

What is the difference between a worm gearbox and a helical gearbox?

Worm gearboxes use a worm screw driving a bronze wheel, producing a 90-degree shaft angle, self-locking capability and very smooth, quiet operation at high reduction ratios in a compact housing. Efficiency is typically 70–88%. Helical gearboxes use angled parallel helical teeth for quiet, high-efficiency (up to 98%) operation at both low and high speeds. They are the preferred choice where energy efficiency and continuous-duty performance are priorities, while worm reducers excel in low-speed, high-reduction positioning and material handling applications.

Are NMRV aluminium worm reducers interchangeable with other brands?

Yes. The NMRV series is manufactured to the internationally standardised NMRV flange and shaft dimensions defined by the IEC/EN standard, meaning our EP-NMRV units are dimensionally interchangeable with Motovario, Bonfiglioli, Transtecno, CMG and other NMRV-compliant brands. This makes them a direct replacement option for MRO applications. Always verify the specific frame size (NMRV 030, 040, 050, 063, 075, 090, 110, 130, 150) and gear ratio when ordering a replacement unit.

Can I use a planetary gearbox with a servo motor?

Yes. Our planetary gearbox reducer series is specifically designed for servo motor integration, featuring precision-ground gears with backlash of 1 arcmin or less and high torsional rigidity. They are available with direct-mount servo flanges compatible with common motor brands. When specifying, provide your servo motor flange type (IEC, Siemens, Yaskawa, Mitsubishi, etc.), shaft diameter and rated torque so we can confirm the correct interface adapter plate.

What lubrication do EPG gearboxes require?

Lubrication requirements depend on the gearbox type and mounting orientation. NMRV aluminium worm reducers are factory-filled with synthetic gear oil (ISO VG 220 equivalent) and are generally considered sealed-for-life in standard applications. WP cast iron worm reducers and larger helical units require periodic oil changes per the service manual — typically at 2,500 hours or annually. Shaft-mounted and planetary units ship with grease-packed bearings. Full lubrication charts are included in the product documentation or available from our technical team.

Do you supply custom gear ratios or special mounting configurations?

For standard catalogue sizes, we supply all ratio options listed in the product series datasheets. For non-standard configurations — such as special output shaft dimensions, extended bearing housings, custom mounting flanges or specific IP ratings — please contact our engineering team with your full requirements. Minimum order quantities apply for custom variants and lead times are typically 6–10 weeks from order confirmation.
