How to Calculate the Gear Ratio of an E Series Planetary Gearbox

The E Series uses a standard planetary stage configuration. For each stage where the ring gear is fixed and the planet carrier rotates as output, the ratio is:

Stage ratio (i) = 1 + (Zring / Zsun)
where Zring = ring gear tooth count · Zsun = sun gear tooth countMulti-stage total ratio = istage 1 × istage 2 × istage 3

Example — E80 two-stage unit: If the first stage has Zring = 60 and Zsun = 20, stage ratio = 1 + (60 / 20) = 4:1. With a second stage also at 4:1, total ratio = 4 × 4 = 16:1. A 1,450 RPM motor produces 1,450 ÷ 16 = 90.6 RPM at the output shaft.

Working backwards from your speed requirement: Divide input RPM by target output RPM to get the required ratio. Need 25 RPM from a 1,450 RPM motor? Required ratio = 1,450 ÷ 25 = 58:1. An E80 or E120 three-stage variant covers this range.

Provide your motor speed, target output RPM, and load torque and we will select the correct E Series frame and stage count, and confirm whether the unit falls within rated or peak torque limits for your duty cycle.

Design Features of the E Series Transmission Planetary Gearbox

  • Verified dimensional match for E Series Planetary Gearbox Replacement. Bolt-circle diameters, output shaft dimensions, keyway widths, and input flange profiles are machined to Brevini E-series drawings. Swapping from a worn Brevini unit takes the time of a mechanical change-out, not an engineering re-design.

  • Peak-to-rated ratio of 1.23× to 1.49×. The E160 runs 24,200 Nm rated with a 34,000 Nm peak — a 40% surge margin. The E260 handles 36,600 Nm continuously and 45,000 Nm at peak. These margins are confirmed by FEA on the planet carrier and ring gear, not estimated from catalogue scaling.

  • Four application variants in one frame family. The same E Series frame size is available as a standard planetary gear unit (EM), a dedicated wheel drive (ED), a track drive (ET), a quad-mount drive (EQ), or compact drive configurations (EC2 / EC3 / EC4). No new tooling or interface engineering is needed when changing application type within the same torque class.

  • Sealed construction for outdoor and mobile equipment. Double-lip seals at input and output shafts; housing designed for wash-down and submersion resistance in wheel-drive and track-drive configurations. Suitable for agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and marine auxiliary drives exposed to water, mud, and fine debris.

  • As an OEM Planetary Gearbox Supplier, we support custom ratio and interface requests. Beyond the standard model range, we accept project-specific gear ratio requirements, non-standard output shaft diameters, and special flange patterns for OEM integration. Minimum order quantities apply; contact us for a project quotation.

Where the E Series Planetary Gearbox Is Used

Wheel Drive Systems

E10–E50 units (1,480–6,300 Nm) serve as hub-reduction drives on compact loaders, platform trucks, and AGVs where motor and gearbox mount coaxially inside the wheel hub.

Track Drive Units

E80–E160 ET-series variants (11,200–24,200 Nm) fit mini-excavator, crawler crane, and pipe-layer undercarriages. ET-series profiles match Brevini track-drive mounting patterns exactly.

Winch & Hoist Drives

E120–E260 winch-drive variants (16,800–36,600 Nm) power marine deck winches, construction hoists, and anchor-handling equipment. The hollow output shaft accepts the drum shaft without an intermediate coupling.

Agricultural Machinery

Compact E10–E30 units drive seeder metering shafts, spreader discs, and harvester head drives where a low-profile, high-torque output is needed within a 200 mm axial envelope.

Industrial Slewing Drives

E160 and E260 EC-series configurations (24,200–36,600 Nm) suit crane slewing rings, solar-tracker azimuth drives, and rotary table systems requiring high torque in a compact radial footprint.
