HZPT 45 HP Post Hole Digger Gearbox | 2.92:1 Right-Angle Drive, 3-Pt Hitch

This post hole digger gearbox is a 45 HP, right-angle bevel gear unit built for 3-point hitch post hole digger attachments. It converts horizontal PTO shaft rotation to a vertical 2" output at a fixed 2.92:1 step-down ratio, delivering the torque multiplication needed to drive auger bits through clay, rocky soil, and hardpan. The 1-1/4" round input shaft accepts standard 540 RPM tractor PTO output, and the dual 1/2" output shaft holes provide a secure, two-bolt auger mounting. At 55 lbs with a ductile iron housing, it is a direct-fit replacement for SpeeCo Model 65 & Compact, CountyLine, AgKNX Model 650, and Tool-Tuff Model 650 & 1000 post hole digger units — no drilling, no shimming, no fabrication required.

What Is a Post Hole Digger Gearbox and What Does It Do?

A post hole digger gearbox is the power-transfer core of a tractor-mounted auger attachment. It sits between the PTO driveshaft and the auger bit, solving a specific mechanical problem: the tractor's PTO spins horizontally at 540 RPM, but the auger needs to spin vertically and at a lower speed with higher torque. A right-angle bevel gearbox changes the shaft direction by 90° and steps down the speed at a 2.92:1 ratio — so for every 2.92 rotations of the input, the auger turns once, with nearly three times the input torque applied to the bit.

Without this torque multiplication, a tractor PTO shaft connected directly to an auger bit would either stall in firm soil or spin so fast that the bit would skip off the surface instead of cutting in. The 2.92:1 ratio in this unit is the standard configuration for 30–45 HP compact and utility tractors — enough torque for 6", 9", and 12" auger bits in most soil types, including compacted clay and dry hardpan found across the Canadian prairies and BC interior.

This specific unit is a direct-fit replacement gearbox, not a universal adaptor. The 4-1/4" ear spacing, 7/8" mounting pin, 1-1/4" input, and 2" output dimensions are shared across multiple OEM brands, which is why a single HZPT unit can replace SpeeCo, CountyLine, AgKNX, and Tool-Tuff units without any modification.

Working Principle & Component Breakdown

Power flow through this post hole digger gearbox follows a straight path: tractor PTO → input shaft → bevel gear set → output shaft → auger bit. Each component in that path is sized for the 45 HP load rating, with a ductile iron housing providing the structural rigidity to hold the gear mesh alignment under the lateral and axial forces that occur when an auger bites through roots, rocks, and layered soil.

① Input Shaft
1-1/4" Round, 540 RPM

Accepts the PTO driveshaft coupler. The 3/8" cross-pin hole allows a shear pin to be fitted for overload protection — when the auger hits an immovable obstruction, the pin shears before the gearbox internals are damaged.

② Bevel Gear Set
Straight cut, 2.92:1 ratio

Two meshed bevel gears — one on the input shaft, one on the output shaft — redirect rotation 90° and amplify torque. The straight-cut profile is less sensitive to axial alignment errors than spiral bevel gears, which matters in field conditions where housing deflection occurs under heavy load.

③ Ductile Iron Housing
Line-bored, black powder-coat

Ductile iron (ISO 1083 GJS-400) is chosen over grey cast iron for its ability to flex rather than crack under impact — critical when a 9" auger bit strikes an unexpected boulder. The housing is line-bored after casting to ensure input and output bore axes are exactly perpendicular, keeping gear mesh geometry correct over the service life.

④ Output Shaft
2" Round, dual 1/2" holes

The 2" diameter provides the cross-sectional area to transmit the full torque load to the auger hub. Two 1/2" cross-holes spaced 90° apart allow a double-bolt or cross-pin auger attachment method, giving more secure engagement than a single-pin design.

⑤ Mounting Ears & Pin
4-1/4" spread, 7/8" pin

The mounting ears bolt or pin to the post hole digger frame. The 4-1/4" inside-ear dimension and 7/8" pin diameter are the industry-standard configuration for this gearbox class, enabling the direct OEM interchangeability across SpeeCo, CountyLine, AgKNX, and Tool-Tuff frames.

⑥ Shaft Guards
Input & output — included

Rotating PTO shafts and auger stubs are legally required to be guarded in most Canadian provinces (OHSA, farm safety regulations). Guards are included in the box — not sold separately. Install them before first use.

Where This Post Hole Digger Gearbox Gets Used

The 45 HP rating and 2.92:1 ratio make this gearbox suited to any application where a 30–45 HP tractor drives a 3-point hitch post hole digger. The following six scenarios represent its most common uses across Canadian farms and land operations.

Livestock & Pasture Fencing
AB · SK · MB · BC Ranches

Fence post installation for cattle, horse, and hog operations. A 6" or 9" auger on this post hole digger gearbox cuts through the clay and glacial till common in Prairie topsoil. Post spacing for livestock perimeter fencing runs 8–10 feet — a typical quarter-section fence job requires 400–600 holes.

Vineyard & Orchard Post Setting
Okanagan BC · Niagara ON

Trellis post installation in established orchards and vineyards. The 45 HP rating handles the rocky, root-laced soil of BC Okanagan hillside vineyards. A 6" auger allows tight post placement between vine rows where larger equipment can't manoeuvre.

Rural Building Construction
Pole barns · Equipment sheds

Drilling the 12"–18" diameter holes required for pole barn and Quonset hut foundation posts. The 2.92:1 step-down ratio provides adequate torque for a 12" auger bit in medium-hard soil — the upper limit for a 45 HP tractor in this configuration.

Windbreak & Tree Planting
Prairie shelter belt programs

Government-assisted shelter belt and woodlot planting programs across Saskatchewan and Manitoba require hundreds of planting holes per day. The 540 RPM input and 2.92:1 ratio give a cycle time of 30–60 seconds per hole in loam, keeping up with a two-person planting crew.

Rural Road & Signage
Municipalities · Rural property

Road sign post installation and rural mailbox post setting for municipalities and rural property owners. The direct-fit compatibility with CountyLine and SpeeCo attachments makes this a straightforward replacement when a municipal or county-owned digger needs a new gearbox mid-season.

Deck & Dock Foundation
Residential · Seasonal structures

Helical pier and concrete tube foundation holes for residential decks, docks, and outbuildings. A compact utility tractor with a 3-point post hole digger and this gearbox can drill below frost line (typically 3–4 feet in BC, 4–6 feet in Alberta) in under 3 minutes per hole in average soil.

Post Hole Digger Gearbox Maintenance Schedule & Procedures

The most common cause of post hole digger gearbox failure is not mechanical wear — it is running dry. This unit ships without oil. A gearbox operated even briefly without 80W-90 gear oil will score the bevel gear faces and spin the input shaft bearings in their races within minutes of running under load. Oil the gearbox before the first hole, not after the first problem.

⚠ Shipped Dry — Oil Before First Use

Remove the rear 1/4" fill plug and pour 80W-90 gear oil through the top plug hole until oil begins to run from the rear plug opening. Reinstall and tighten both plugs before operating. Approximate fill volume: 0.5–0.75 litres depending on orientation.

Frequently Asked Questions — Post Hole Digger Gearbox

Q1. Will this post hole digger gearbox fit my SpeeCo Model 65 or CountyLine digger?

Yes — if your existing gearbox has a 4-1/4" inside ear spread, a 7/8" mounting pin, a 1-1/4" round input shaft, and a 2" round output shaft, this unit is a bolt-in replacement. These are the standard dimensions for the SpeeCo Model 65 & Compact, CountyLine, AgKNX Model 650, and Tool-Tuff Model 650 & 1000. To confirm before ordering: measure across the inside faces of your mounting ears and the diameter of both shafts. If the numbers match, the gearbox will drop straight in. If you are unsure, email us a photo of your existing unit to [email protected] — we will confirm compatibility within one business day.

Q2. What oil do I use, and how much does it take?

80W-90 gear oil is the correct specification. SAE 90 or 85W-90 are acceptable alternatives. Do not use motor oil, hydraulic fluid, or 10W-30 — these lack the extreme pressure (EP) additives needed to protect the bevel gear tooth faces under load. To fill: remove the 1/4" rear plug and pour oil into the top hole until it begins running out the rear opening. The fill volume is approximately 0.5–0.75 litres. Reinstall both plugs snugly before running the unit. Change the oil after the first 10 operating hours to remove break-in metal particles, then once per season thereafter.

Q3. My gearbox sheared the input pin — does that mean the gearbox is damaged?

Not necessarily — the shear pin is a deliberate sacrificial component. It is designed to break before the gearbox internals are damaged when the auger hits an immovable obstruction such as a buried rock, old tree root, or frozen soil layer. After a shear, inspect the output shaft for bend by rotating it by hand and checking for runout. If the shaft spins true and the housing shows no cracks, install a new shear pin of the correct diameter and resume operation. If the output shaft is bent or you hear grinding after reinstalling the pin, the internal gears may have been damaged before the pin failed — contact us for a replacement unit.

Q4. Can I use this gearbox on a 50 HP or 60 HP tractor?

The 45 HP post Hole digger gearbox rating is the sustained-use maximum for this gearbox. Running it at full throttle on a 50–60 HP tractor may not immediately destroy the unit, but operating above the rated HP accelerates gear face wear and input shaft bearing fatigue, typically reducing service life from several hundred hours to under 50. For tractors above 45 HP, we stock the 75 HP version of this post hole digger gearbox, which uses the same mounting dimensions so it is a direct swap on the same frame. If you are running a 9" or 12" auger in dense soil at full tractor throttle, the 75 HP unit is the correct choice.

Q5. How long does shipping take to Alberta or Saskatchewan?

In-stock orders placed before 2:00 PM PST ship same business day from our Richmond, BC warehouse. Transit time to central Alberta (Red Deer, Lacombe, Camrose) is typically 3–4 business days by ground courier. To Saskatoon or Regina it is 4–5 business days. If your post hole digger is down during fencing season and you need the gearbox faster, call us at +1-604-719-2870 before noon PST — we can arrange next-day air to most Alberta and Saskatchewan cities for an additional freight surcharge.

T. Bergstrom

— Swift Current, Saskatchewan

"We install rural fencing commercially — go through a gearbox every 1–2 seasons. This HZPT unit has lasted two full seasons so far with no issues. OEM replacements ran $280–$320 from the dealer. Paid considerably less here with the same performance."

G. Kowalczyk

— Leduc County, Alberta

"Ordered Tuesday afternoon from Richmond. Arrived in Edmonton Thursday morning. Two days for a gearbox during fencing season — that's what matters. The unit itself is solid, heavier than the original CountyLine part, which I take as a good sign."
